I finally got round to putting my replacement unit in, a 2 min job in the end and it worked like the old one however I managed to get my work collegue who has a Passat to allow me to try his. I put this in the Polo and it worked perfectly displaying the outside temp on the climate display and allowed temp increases in 0.5c steps the system responded to each 0.5c step so it is sensetive enough to allow the smaller increases. So if your climate display ever goes go for the one with a J on the end of the model number (don't have the full model number to hand but the Polos is a C on the end and the numbers were the same).

That's good to know :D

Interestingly, I spotted THIS Polo on eBay for sale in Austria, which shows the outside temp in Climatronic. So perhaps European 6N2s were fitted with the J units as standard. Weird!
