1272cc - sprint/race engine?

Post by mk1dub »

Hi all, I'm James, new to this forum and I'm hoping you can all help me out with my questions along the way. :D

I own a 1.3 Mk1 Golf Driver, although it isn't a 1.3 anymore! I've fitted a 1.8 16v engine with all the injection parts, task and a half  but it's done :). It's pretty much finished now (few little bits and bobs to add inside) and I am well pleased with the results and how I stuck at it the majority of last year, there were times when I wanted to give up but I'm glad I bloomin' well didn't. Bring on those trackdays!

More info on the Mk1 can be found on the Club GTI Forum:
http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=69825

...I've turned my attention (some of my spare time) to the little 1272cc engine that lived in my Mk1 originally and I'm thinking of turning it into an engine for sprinting/racing. (long term project)

I think one or two of the Polo engines are slightly different to my GF coded 1272, Polo engines use dished pistons and flat cylinder heads from this era?

There isn't really much to them by the looks of things:
Image

Off comes the alternator:
Image

Rocker cover off:
Image

Cold clearances, well, there wasn't any (thought I'd see how you do it for later):
Image

Out comes a retaining spring and rocker finger to reveal the ball stud:
Image

A rocker finger and spring yesterday:
Image

Distributor and leads removed:
Image

Oily close ups (one of the ball studs is quite heavily seized, so that will need replacing along with it's rocker finger from another cylinder head):
Image

The open air workshop:
Image

Fuel pump removed (need a blanking plate for the apeture):
Image

Engine looking a bit bare now, alternator, distributor, water pump, belt, camshaft sproket all removed:
Image

Camshaft end plate removed:
Image

Camshaft removed:
Image

Open air workshop looking a little busier, cylinder head removed!:
Image

Bores are tiny!:
Image

They dont look too bad for just shy of 100k miles:
Image

Not sure what to make of the valves and their colours:
Image

All 8 rocker fingers ready for action once more:

I will hopefully get the bottom end stripped down this weekend.

Brief plans:
Worked head, enlarged ports, 37mm intake, 32mm exhaust valves, ~300 degree camshaft, double valve springs, vernier pulley.
Twin 40 DCOE's.
Up the compression ratio by decking the block (if ok by sprint/race regs) if not, custom pistons.
Con rods should be ok to around 7500rpm(?) and the whole bottom end will be lightened and balanced along with a lighter flywheel.

I would like to go for a 16v head but I think this might be a little too complicated for now. So an 1.3 8v and a goal of 100bhp/litre it will be (or at least 100bhp atw). Pistons and Rods might be changed later down the line.

What do we all think? [:$]

There is a possibility I could use this engine for racing, in the 750MC Hot Hatch championship. If funds permit... these regulations would slightly alter the outcome of the engine, i.e. it would definately have to stay 8v, a rebore up to 0.060" max but the rest of the engine is pretty much free.

Oh and if you're wondering what car the engine might find a home in (the main reason I am posting this here), I was thinking of a Mk2 Polo Coupe (just over 700kgs standard), or even a Mk1 Polo but they are hard to come by and pricey. I'll be able to go a little berg-cup-esque with the bodywork for sprinting but not for racing.

hey mate

firstly, welcome to the forum, glad you've found us, secondadly, loving the look of the mk1, looks spot on.

thirdly, your plans sound very interesting. some of the stuff you've mentioned is a bit over my head but i get the idea anyway! 100bhp would be a good power out of a 1.3 i must say. there are a couple of chaps on the forum that deal with racing type stuff so hopefully they can help you out a load!

but please, keep us posted on your progression, you seemed to no what your doing and have got your head screwed on.

Hope you enjoy your stay!

Regards

Sounds like a very good plan, i wouldnt have thought 100 brake/litre was too hard, especially with oversized valves and a high compression ratio.

There are people in germany who put 16v heads on these bottom ends and tune the s**t out of them, but i dont know any specifics.

Keep us posted, and good luck with finding a car

you should see 100 bhp easy mate with those mods. Ive got a mechanical gk engine, webers, sorg inlet, exhaust and after portmatching was hoping for around 90bhp

Thanks for the warm welcome. :)

SpikeyG40 - thanks for the compliments!

SteB - those Germans are crazy aren't they, the reason they put the 16v head on to the 1300's is because of their hillclimb/sprint regulations being upto 1300cc and the block has to be the original from that particular car (or as per the UK, externally identifiable as that of the original car). I might go 16v later on but it is a lot more work and head scratching.

ZOMBIE - Where did you find the GK? Didn't think you could get them over here? Can you post any pictures of the Sorg inlet manifold, I could do with seeing what the design of it looks like, as there are a couple of choices at the moment.

tupac2makaveli71 - No room for another car at the moment :? but that one of Phil's does look ideal for what I would be after!

Day 2. (29/04/06)

Gearbox removal and removing bits from the block.

Time to remove the gearbox from the equation:
Image

That's that done:
Image
Image

Coolant pipe from water pump and inlet manifold heater/exhaust pipe both removed, found the remains of a distributor cap, a washer and a sleeve from the carb down the back!:
Image

The workshop again. Sump now off:
Image

A quick look inside:
Image

Nice bit of engineering:
Image

A quick tidy up:
Image

First new part(s):
Image

My cat came to have a nose around:
Image

One assembled engine stand (need some longer bolts or threaded bar/nuts for it):
Image

Arty shot:
Image

Everything looks so tiny!:
Image

Looks so simple on the outside:
Image

Crank pulley removal:
Image

Pulley removed:
Image

Next, the oil pump:
Image

Oil pump removed:
Image

The surface doesn't look too bad but will need to be checked:
Image

Looking quite bare on the outside now:
Image

Pressure plate and clutch removal:

Items removed:

Next installment will possibly include the removal of the flywheel and taking the pistons, rods and crank out. Stay tuned.

Welcome to the forum!

MK1Dub, just to let you know that there is a salvage yard on ebay that is breaking a MK1 Polo, he's already started, and the insides and interior, chrome have all been stripped pretty much, but that leaves the body which would be PERFECT for you, as its been stripped as it is and not only that but then can strip it some more of excessive layers..

i'll get u the link 1 sec:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-POLO-mk1-1981- ... dZViewItem

hope this helps you mate :)

Perhaps in return you can lend a hand in helping me understand anything in the future with regards to my engine..

(by the way, hands off!, the: bumpers, chrome trims, blue interior, side door pockets, boot lifter and wing mirrors are all mine :) - already ordered :P )

Oh and nice Golf :) looks smart, clean but not overly done.. subtle but cool ;)

Good to see another "possible MK1 owner" - hence the encouraging find of MK1 above :D

Quick question, which models/specification level, Mk2 Polos came with a 5 speed gearbox? Did anyone Mk1's have a 5 speed?

Any ideas of the gearbox codes as well if anyone knows?
