I'm not 100% sure but i believe the MK1 came with a 5 speed over 1.1
i know my 895cc didnt :)

and yes you can fit a MK2 5 speed gearbox over onto an MK1 with little modification..

The reason I ask is, if I end up racing a Mk2 Polo, I'm thinking that 5 ratios will be better than 4, with a peaky/high rpm engine.

The regulations state that:

"Permitted modifications: Gearbox ratios are free but the number of forward ratios must be the same as the original for the vehicle being raced"

Which is why I wondered whether or not there is a particular model of Mk2 which came with a 5 speed gearbox. So if someone could clarify which Mk2 Polos came with a 5 speeder as standard, that would be great. :)

(I wouldn't want to risk the rariety of a Mk1 Polo for circuit racing )

you need a late flywheel to fit a 5 speed box (86-94) To fit a 5-speed in a mk1 you really need to change the entire front suspension to mk3 stuff, including the driveshafts for compatibility reasons.

Only very very late 1300 Formel Es come with a 5speed box, the one in the for sale section has a wide ratio 4 speed.

Most late mk2s had the 5-speed as an optional extra. Anything other than a polo fox which were alll 1.05 4 speed.

Love your work! I'm doing something similar on my mk1 polo GT. Are you using some performance cam or leaving stock? What's the gearbox code and what is nececer for swap (4speed->5speed), gear linkeage, mounting, sway bar, ...?

I'm pretty sure no mark 1's had the 5-speed (or at least no common ones).

There were a couple of 1.3's with 5 speeds, the best choice for you, I would imagine, would be the Coupe S box, which is pretty close-ratio'd.

There's no real issue with using a Mk3 box though, which are widely available in 5 speed (again, the GT would probably be the best thing for you at a guess as it's close-ratio'd). I'll post some ratios and references for you in a few.

Someone's sleeping in the same room as my Mk1 and late Mk2 Books, so here's the early Mk2 ratios (82-84)

4 speed

1st gear 3.45:1
2nd gear 1.95:1
3rd gear 1.25:1
4th gear 0.88:1

3+E (1093cc formel E AFAIK):

1st gear 3.45:1
2nd gear 1.77:1
3rd gear 1.04:1 / 1.08:1 (before/after aug 1982)
4th gear 0.80:1

Final drive ratio

1043cc / 1093cc / 1272cc
4.27:1 / 4.57:1 / 4.57:1

Codes for above are:

GU, GW, QS, GX, though I have no idea at all which one is which!

Mk3 Gearbox codes (courtesy Haynes Jokebook):

(missed out the 4-speeds)

5-speed

Engine code/cc/references
AAU/1043cc/ AHZ, AYZ, CEE, CEM (none of these are commonly found)
AAV/1272cc SPI/CEG, 8P
3F/1272cc MPI "GT"/AHD, CEH (AHD is the common one and definatly is, but I think both are close ratio boxes)
PY/1272cc MPI "G40"/CEK, ATV (pretty tall ratios on these)

That's all the information I have to hand.

Coupe S box is a 4 + E, not really suited to racing. A 5-speed 1.05 box from a late mk2 or a mk3 (except saloon) or a GT box would be best. These are all close ratio. Codes for the ones you want are AFA, AHZ (1.05) AHD and CEH (gt)

Linkages. Your car could be a different story, as I think it has a cable instead of a rod linkage, but I could be wrong. Might need a different clutch too, but that's only a guess as I know next to nothing about Mk1 GT's.

1400 16v box is a better box to be using, perfect ratios suited to the track, you only need a max of 120-130mph for track.

but sorry ive just sold my LSD'd 16v box. Still easy to come by.

gearboxes fit from typ 86, 86c, 2f and 6N.. think also 9A fits.. rod shiftage up to the earliest 6N's.. later 6N's have cable linkage.. a little job to convert, but not that hard..

Most 6Ns have a box suitable, later 6N2 and 9N polos have a different input shaft size. Although As far as I know theres nothing to stop you using the later clutch as well.
