Polo GTi Issues

Post by GTILass »

right ive a W reg (2000) GTI

when i picked her up clutch was knackered - full clutch been fitted

now ive still got problems - excuse my lack of technical description.....

u cant do anythin in 1st or reverse at normal speed - u can either roll her off gently just using clutch or u can go off at full speed. no inbetween. so this problem mainly occurs in 1st and revers

if u do get her moving with the use of accelerator it tends to rev itself to about 20 revs and then irratic within the band before settling down. if u try to move in that period it stalls.

shes also guzzling petrol, and if u start her up she sometimes just turns herself off without u gettin a chance to touch a pedal or button

now the garage have plugged her into vag com and nothing is coming up

theyve still got her as i dont want her home til its sorted cos if shes havin a bad day its seriously embarrasing taking her anywhere

does anyone have any idea what could be the issue/issues?

The part with 1st and reverse sounds like the clutch isn't fully dis-engaging should be easily sorted by adjusting the clutch cable. You should get them to check the pedal box as this was the same symptons I had when my pedal box was going.

The car cutting out and drinking the petrol could be the temp sensor thats knackered it doesn't always show up on vagcom its a cheap and easy part to replace to at least rule it out. Shouldn't really cause it to cut out completly though, I would get them to replace the fuel filter just in case might be worth putting a couple of tanks of Shell Optimax through it to give the engine a clean out.

its a brand new clutch and pedal box was replaced as part of a recall

could feel the clutch sticking before but its not anymore

unfortunatly the garage are dealing with it - i cant just replace stuff as im not paying  but any sugestions ill pass on!

My pedeal box was replaced, however this didn't stop it from breaking. :( Just had a new one fitted under warranty about 2 months ago. :D

Anyway I hope they find what is wrong. GoodLuck!

I fill up with about £40 and always get at least 270, that's all town driving with a lead foot where the speed limit permits

Got to say there is defo something wrong with 200 out out a tank full, I went to Alton towers last weekend with a pretty constant 75-80mph each way (about 280miles) I got over 400 miles out a tank which worked out about 43mpg I was amazed at this considering the Polos short gearing in 5th.

Things I would check :-

1. Check the back brakes are not seized on a common problem for them, jack the car up take the handbrake off and see if you can turn the wheel by hand, easy for a garage and a 30mins job to strip the brakes clean them and put them back together this could have a big effect on fuel consumption and require you to give more revs to pull away.

2. Replace the coolant temp sensor (£15) this would have an affect on fuel consumption as it doesn't know when the engine is warmed up so runs it rich constantly.

3. Check the tyre pressures if they are all running low ish it could take a couple of miles off per gallon.

The 3 things for the garage would be cheap and easy todo I would insist they do the above, to them a hours labour top and they would get the sensor at cost which is under £10 I would exepct.

Did you buy the car from the garage who did the work, and was this work conducted under warranty?. If so I'd throw it back at them until it's sorted.

the garage i bought it from who insist its fine are in the s**t

apparnetly they took it to vw yesterday for diagnosis to be run

mum took it to vw yesterday and the car went to vw yesterday but they never mentioned my faults just turned up in it.

vw mechanic took it out and before he got off forecourt said 'theres a problem'

they think its cambelt related but theyve rung the people i bought it from to see what they wanna do

Sounds like a similar situation to when I brought mine. The independant dealer kept insisting that there was nothing wrong so I took it to my mechanic who then diagnosed the faults (cam belt tensioners and cam speed sensor). I then had to take it back to the garage I brought the car from to tell them what was wrong so that they could fix it  They then moaned about how much it was going to cost them to repair after I had paid to have the faults diagnosed :!:

Problems with 1st gear

Post by Erika GTi »

Hi, sorry for the late post... only just registered!! I'm having the same problem on my 6n gti with 1st and reverse. Haven't had anyone look at it yet so i'd be interested to hear what your garage came up with. :)
