knocking noise from front drivers side suspension

Post by AKs_SlickPolo »

My 9n seems to give a knocking noise when turning the steering. I had it before i lowered too, but its now slightly louder. Its when your at parking speed normally and when you turn the steering quite a bit. Ive been told it may be the top mount.

Also do people get sort of noises that make the suspension sound stiff???? normally when going up humps, basically suspension doesnt sound as stock suspension, sounds like its hard and stiff if u know what i mean. Is this normal once you have lowered? or could there be something wrong?

Thanks for any help in advance 8)

It sounds like your polo has caught the mysterious knocking suspension syndrome which is incurable even by VW mechanic's, see thread below titled "Help: knocking noise from rear suspension"

Yeah i read that but it seems to be different to my problem. Its when the cars stationary, when driving say like 20mph, it dont make no noise.

I was a happy 9N owner with no noises until now

I think it's all related tho, mine has knocked in the past when I have been stationary which is weird :? It now does it when I go round corners, reverse, go forward, I'm sure it does it when I'm not even in the car

the ultimate solution to rattles, clicks, knocks and vibrations: your favorite mp3's and a decent head unit. this is my experience after trying to solve such problems for the past 3 years... :)

This is a good solution for rattles but when your suspension is knocking you need to get it looked at, after all you don't want something falling off at 70-80mph on a motorway

Forget the stiff sounding stuff. I think i described it wrongly. Its actually squeaking, creaking, occasionally, at the back and at front.

Assume its bushes, am i right? thinking of upgrading to powerflex, if they are avialiable for the 9n. Powerflex say they are p*** easy to fit on their website, are they really??

Yeah mine creaks and squeaks over speed humps. I've got uprated powerflex bushes fitted to mine made no difference was a waste of money :x

Edited to say they did stop the knocking for about a week then it came back, I bought them off a guy from on here. There not listed on the powerflex website I emailed them and they sent me some info I can send it to you if you want?

Definitely all put together right? Mine came from missing out a substantial part of the top mount.

However my antiroll bar was loose too. :? dunno if that had anything to do with it!

Yeah, everything seems to be put back right.

But where the ant-roll bar loops over axle do you know if it is quite close to the axle when jacked up? as mine was about 60mm away from it, and that was when its was fully jacked up. :? wondering if this could be one of these noises?

But the guy did tell me that the top mounts bearings were slightly dry and stiff. So im thinking it may be this. as it does it even when the car is stationary, handbrake up and everything

Any ideas?

Not sure if this is much help but when i had my gti lowered (6n2) it creaked a bit, since putting lower profile tires on it's stopped.....so.....

Could it be the wheels / tire catching something?

I've had pretty much new everything on mine apart from new spring.... but as the other thread says it could be something to do with the drop links?
