So G/F gets in the car ths morning starts it up, goes to drive away and it's not having it - all drive is gone. Grinding noise when you put it in gear and that's about it.
So, what do you reckon - clutch, drive shaft, gearbox - any obvious signs?
All drive has gone

99% certain it will be the diff bearing thats gone which results in loss of all drive rather than a single gear, a very very common problem on the 5 speed boxes if your lucky the bearings will just need replaced a gearbox recon will cost £250 ish you may aswell replace the clutch when its out aswell and I would get the 2nd gear syncro replaced aswell as these go also and cheap to replace when the box is in bits
You wll have a hard time sourcing a 2nd hand GTi box as they are very rare your better just getting your bearings done on yours as the chances are the 2nd box will go at some point aswell. I wouldn't attempt putting anymore drive through the box as it could make the damage worse.
Could be the clutch again another weak spot but generally it would start slipping first, a quick visual heck of the drive shafts would rule them out.

Yeup beleave VW charge around £1700-1800 to replace the box, ironically even the VW sourced box isn't new its a re-furbed one and your old one goes in on exchange so they can rebuild it for another customer bit of a p*** take when they are charging £1000 odd for the box.
Might not be the box though so fingures crossed.
