Amplified aerial?

Am I right in believeing that the 9N has an amplified aerial as std. From what ive read the VW headunits amplify the signal they get from the aerial. This would explain my poor radio reception since fitting the aftermarket pioneer unit

can anyone clarify this?

also is this what I need to sort it out?
