Tyre Tread Depth

Post by Buzby »

Just been to get a new set of tyres for my polo, the old ones were down to about 3mm. The guy who changed them seemed perplexed that i wanted to get them changed as there was plenty of "life" left in them. But i had them changed anyway as the tyres were the originals so 3 years i thought wasnt too bad.

I dont like letting tires get to the legal limit before changing them so..

What would you let your tyres get to before changing them. :?:

Last time i changed mine one was close to the legal limit something like 1.9mm. So i changed all 4 at the same time - expensive but safe.

I let my old Toyos (on the front) get down to just above 2mm before replacing them :)

I would say about 2mm would be a good time to change them - all you have to do is hit a puddle at speed and your aqua planeing. Not a good idea

A while back in Auto Express I read a tyre test and the results showed that at 3mm tread, you have lost over two thirds of the performance of the tyre - not only in terms of grip and handling but also in increased fuel consumption
