Anyone else had this? When I turn the wheel I can hear a sort of scratching noise, as if the wheel's rubbing against something. It's obviously very slight as it doesn't stop the wheel moving in any way.
Would be good if someone could help - the noise is starting to get on my nerves! Next stop is just to spray WD40 everywhere
i had this problem when I bought the car, I think it has something to do with the air bag contacts. Spray some wd40 between the gap of the steeing wheel and column thing(the thing with all the indicator stalks).
Not sure if i have explained this very well, if your still stuck take a pic of ur steering wheel, from a birdeye view and I will show you what I mean.
Sure - I'll get a pic later. I liberally applied WD40 to the area midweek and it's pretty much gone now. You can still here a slight meeting of metals but it's 95% better than it was
I have had so many problems with my car when i bought it...including this!
My whole steering column moved up and down and steering wheel was sitting wonky and made a scratching noise when you turned full lock one way to full lock the other way and the steering column physically moved. Very scary! But VW sorted it. Had to get a second opinion cos they argued it was normal and another VW garage said I shouldnt be driving the car because it is dangerous! In the end they were kind enough to fix it! Think they had to tighten some bits up. To be quite honest there was so much I later found wrong with it after driving it away i lost interest in asking exactly what the problem was and just wanted it fixed!!!
This sounds familiar to a noise my mum's car is making. My sister learnt to drive in it and one day she did full lock and it made a massive clonk, now when mum turns her wheel it sounds like something is scraping against something else, its not grinding, more plastic on plastic rubbing. You can feel it through the steering wheel to when it does it.
Just spoke to a friend who had this in his polo. He said that its dirt and grime that clogged up and got caught in the 'white grease' which lubricates the steering column. All is needed is to take the panelling off and clean the area affected, re-apply grease.
