Anyone fitted 280mm discs?

Post by Wardy »

Possibly moving over to a PD100 9N. I see they still use a 256mm disc on the front of these, same size as standard fitment to my current GTi. For the PD100 drivers out there, how do they find the brake performance? It has a fair weight to contend with over the front, and these seem quite small?

Just wondered if anyone tried moving to a 280mm disc on the front? On the GTi, you can just fit carriers from a G60 Golf or Carrado, then fit the bigger disc. Is this possible on the 9N as well?

I thought they looked small as well, but ive had to do emergency stops a couple of times and they will stand the car on the nose and seem powerful enough.

If your going up to 280mm the hub carriers, calipers and carriers, must be changed for the items from a 130hp tdi or the new gti polo, which makes it a little more involved.

The 130 TDi setup is 288mm and not 280 though. If I was going to the trouble of changing hubs etc I'd go straight to a 312mm setup.

Suppose I'll give the 256mm setup a try if/when I drive one.

Hello

I've had a look on my dodgy Portugese ebay parts CD and cross referenced a few numbers to come to the following conclusion:

We know for certain that you need new calipers, carriers, discs, pads and hubs to go 288 GT setup

9n TDIs share essentially the same brake setup as low capacity Golf 4s (1.4s and 1.6s as far as I know). The caliper carrier is all part of the hub unit and hence cannot be swapped easily like the 256-280 mod on 6ns.

Early larger capacity Golf 4s used 280mm brakes, where the later ones used 288mm. The pads for 256 and 280 setups are the same and I *think* the calipers are too (stamped FSIII). Hence if you were to change the discs for 280s and the one-piece hub/carrier for one off an early larger capacity Golf 4 you'd have 280s...???

This is pure speculation, but it looks as though it checks out. That said, once you've got the hub/carriers and discs you wouldn't be so far off the price of a second hand GT setup. It's a tricky one.

I'm pretty fussy about brakes and I find the ones on my 1.9TDI alright and that's after a remap. They're not the best or anything, but they're not dangerous either. As usual, the Pagid pads improved things a lot. If I was keeping the car and had deep pockets I'd like to go 312. And I'd like a hybrid turbo and a FMIC etc. Basically, with the remap to 135ish the brakes are fine, but if you were going for serious power they'd want changing.

Hope there's some food for thought there - If anyone can confirm/deny the ugly 280mm conversion rumour I may or may not have started above, it would be very interesting to find out.

Thanks for the reply. That's also answered my question about what a stage 1 remap will yield as well :)

It does sound more and more likely that a straight carrier replacement upto 280 wouldn't work. Again, will see how I find the 256mm setup. I did the 312mm conversion on my Fabia vRS, so if that's required it will be going over old ground

Cheers,
Steve
