noisey gearbox?

the gearbox in my 88 polo has always sounded really nasty..worse in the lower gears

ive tried new gear oil and some additive...and it hasnt got any better or worse

anyone know what it is that makes them noisey? ive heard a few like it...just wondered if its likely to fail as otherwise its a good car
