9n TDI 100 loss of power

Post by flyfs6 »

I've just driven the car from Woodford to Gatwick (approx 60 miles) and noticed hesitation over and above approx 3k rpm.

Its sort of spluttering and loss of power (in the sense compared to how the car was before in this rev range).

On my drive here I keep thinking its the Mass Air Flow sensor - MAF. Anyone have any other ideas or know if this might be the problem?

Whats the procedure of getting a new maf? Do VW still do exchanges?

If so whats involved & how much should it cost?

We've previously owned a few VAG group cars, and none have had MAF failures. Guess there's always a first.

Thanks

get the coil packs checked. common fault on the polo's not 100% if you get the same fault on the diesels but defo worth checking out

no coil packs on diesels.

could well be MAF, very easy part to change and available as exchange unit from all dealers. Dont be tempted to buy a cheaper GSF or Euro car parts version, you may cure thefault you have but put in a seperate one if you use the wrong part.
Are you sure its not just a boost leak? Any more exhaust smoke than normal?
EGR valves and vnt turbo sticking are all other possibilities?

The tdi's use glow plug instead of coils/spark plugs.

I cant tell if its the EGR or turbo. However when it drives okay the turbo sounds to spool up okay and lets go, pssssst.

I had a similar problem on my car after going up a incline at full boost, it seemed to be flat and didn't like to rev over 3000, although the turbo whine was still there. I disconnected the battery which seemed to clear it, as yet it hasn't reappeared (6months). I think on my car the turbo may have overboosted..?

I would check for leaks as 'richardbw' said before replacing anything as i dont think you shouldn't hear a psssht noise when lifting off on a Tdi.

Now that I'm home, I might disconnect the battery for bit to reset the ecu.

The car makes the dump sound at gear changes (when its on boost) and if pump the gas on purpose to make it do so.

Hope I make some sense.

I had something similar with mine, but I wouldn't say it was spluttering, more just going too flat too soon. No smoke, no unusual noise, no smoke.

The problem was the VNT unit in the turbo not working as it should.

Don't know if this is any use or not, but I thought I'd mention it...

Further to my previous posts, picking up suggestions along the way. I disconnected the car battery completely.

Left it off for a bit (more than 30 mins). Started the car later, drove it and once warm put my foot down.

Its the same, as before it wont run out of steam always at 3k rpm (its so in higher gears).

Lets hope its just the MAF sensor.

Disconnect the sensor before you remove the maf and see if it makes a difference.

If it feels better then bobs your uncle! ;)
