Hi guys, Driving my GTI back home from work last nite, and all of a sudden the car sounded like it had a hole in the exhaust, listening more carefully, the blowing ish sound was coming from the engine bay, Terrible howl when engine is under anysort of load or above 3000rpm, as i back off the power their also appears to be a whurring noise from behind the dash in front of me, likely inside the engine bay, because as i depress the clutch and the rpm drops its dissapears.

Left the car at home today, got home and checked the exhaust manifold, seems fine, The engine seems to bark from the inlet manifold at 2500 rpm above, removed the manifold seems fine, had a look at the back of the valves also seem normal, Having read a few of the symptoms of the failed tensioners, what do you reckon, My GTI is 6 years old now 38K, Not had the belt or tensioners changed yet,

My local VW dealer told me to change my cambelt and tensioners every 40k or 4 years, what ever comes first. As you know, the tensioners are common to seize. Id highly recommend you change both ASAP! Otherwise your asking for a even higher bill to pay.

check the intake pipe, filter and throttle
see if there are any unusual condition,
also check the under side of the airbox,
make sure it's firmly attached to the throttle body
without leakage.

Also check the engine breath hose on the left side of
the aibox, it brings the oil gas direct to the throttle,
so if the hose is off,the air will direct pass throught from
that hole to the throttle.

Just changed the belts and the tensioners now, ran out of light to finish the job though. The intake, filter and throttle seem fine, a little coked up but have just cleaned it out with a bit of brake cleaner. The breather hose however appears to have disintegrated and gone all squdgey, i know on early E46 BMW four cylinders, they have running problems when the breather hose does a similar thing.

Ok the timing went lovely no metal to metal contact at all and all the markers line up, now the thing wont start! Ive pulled the plugs out and attached them to the ht leads. Getting no spark what so ever, can smell the fuel going in though, checked the connection to the DIS module, seems fine, Checked most of the fuses seem fine, any ideas?

Have you place the spark plug near the ground/engine body
when you testing it? It should point at the ground within 1/2 inch
when testing sparks.
