VW and their lovely gearboxes

Post by zahir_213 »

hi guys, dont have a GTI have an SDI complete oppostie of power I know but still a 6N2,
anyways how have people been getting on with the gearbox on the GTI?
Has anyones failed yet?
Mine has started slipping out of 5th gear at 40k miles and is making a kind of rough noise when cruising along when any gear is engaged(doesnt always do this though)
Has anyone else had their car slipping out of gear or any other gearbox related issues?

Also wondering if anyone knows of a decent place to pick up a recon box?

Cheers

Yeh I had my GTI slip out of 5th gear on the M25 last week. Thankfully its hasn't done it since. I'm going to get it rebuilt though.

Poping out of 5th is a sign that the gearbox oil could be low, all Polo gearboxes have a problem with the seals going causing oil to leak out. If you catch it early you should be able to get away with replacing the seals and filling it up with fresh oil.
