Exhaust or something worse?

Post by beautyfiend »

I was driving yesterday and heard a weird noise (cross between a hoover and a racing car- tone gets higher as I go faster...).
It only happens (or I can only hear it) when I get up to 30mph and higher.
I reversed back into my parking space the other day and backed into the kerb, I did hear a bit of a crunch- think I might have hit the tail pipe... Could this have caused it?
Anyway just wondering how much I'd be looking at to replace the whole exhaust- if it is that.
Cheers.

hmmmm you could have knocked the exhaust pipes going under the car (cat etc) out of place and therfore all is needed is getting the car up on a ramp and clamping it back together and get some exhaust paste on it to make sure.

Or you could have damaged the tail pipe or back box like you said which will cost you about £70 down quick fit to get a new one fitted.

But dont take my advice as proffesional its just a few ideas, best to ask around first because you dnt wanna spend money on a new zorst if it aint that !

Yeah sounds like a poss exhaust problem! My backbox detatched from the rest of the system and i had a similar sound. check backbox for looseness etc. I got a new backbox and centrebox for eighty quid fron quick fit with 3 year warranty.

My Cat convertor made a nosie like this i think i bottomed it out going around on the mountain but it was doing my head in. Take it to a garage wih a ramp and get them to put it up and get them to tell you whats wrong.

Annoyed!

Post by beautyfiend »

Well, just been to Kwik fit (took absolutely ages to get there coz of roadworks!). They put it on a ramp and told me it was the backbox- £48, was relieved it wasn't too expensive, only took them about 20mins.

Drove it home- Still making the noise- very pi$$ed off!!! Gonna have to go back tomorrow and see what they say.
Seems this always happens to me- I have a problem, pay to have it fixed then find out the problems still there!

Went back to KF before they closed.
They put it on the ramp again- called me over to see that a bracket that the exhaust kinda rests on was bent...Don't know how they missed it the first time  ...
Said they don't do brackets and I should get one from a main dealer!
So that begs the question- did I really need a new backbox? Kwik Fit says yes, reckon it was rotten but then they would say that wouldn't they?
On the bright side if it really was on it's way out it's now been replaced.
On the crap side I'm £48 lighter and still have an annoying noise coming from the exhaust. Don't have much cash at the moment so, I'm gonna have to put up with it...
Do you think the bent bracket will cause problems with next months MOT?
