Insurance rant!

Post by Si_GTi »

Just got my insurance renewal notice through the post from the lovely people at Direct Line:

For the last twelve months, from 01/09/05-30/08/06 my premium was £462.00 fully comp inc. legal protection, one named driver and protected NCB. The named driver is my Mum, who has been driving for over 30 years with an unblemished license.

Renewal for the next twelve months, including all of the above, is £576.45!!!! WTF!!

Okay, I added the BMC to my policy but that only cost me an extra £20 (half of which was an admin charge) and I expected it to make a difference of maybe a tenner come renewal for the next twelve months... I'm 25 and I have been driving for seven years, only making one claim back in April '05 which was not my fault (therefore doesn't affect the premium). FFS!

I was expecting to see a decrease in my policy! Robbing bstards! Needless to say I am now on the lookout for a different insurer

Any suggestions? Must be mod-friendly as I plan to lower within the next twelve months...

/rant :x

renewal quotes are a joke, theres nothing stopping you from taking out a NEW policy with the same company.

They know if they dont, theyll loose you to another company :)

definately pays to shop around come renewal time.

i'm with tesco and the initial quote was very good!! but then they hammered £120 on my policy for lowering my car and adding a strut brace!!

i had a really good quote from http://www.brentacre.co.uk/

they said they'd cover me on all mods without any extra charge as long as i didn't exceed roughly 200bhp!! :D
stupidly i didn't go for it :(

Well, a little update for you:

I submitted an online quote request with Adrian Flux last night, Club Polo have got a discount scheme set up for their members with both Adrian Flux and Brentacre, its just that AF have got online quotes set up and I'm a lazy arse

But the good news is that AF will do me a like for like policy for £405.00 :D which means they definitely have my attention and almost certainly have my business

Got a couple of other places to try but at the mo AF are out in front by a long way. I am now very puzzled as to why Direct Line have shoved their premium up by so much! Will be phoning them and asking if they can match AF's quote :P

Cheers

Just been in contact with Direct Line, their reason for the increased policy is as follows:

I put a BMC on in July, one month before the end of the current policy. This cost £22 of which half was admin charges, so it actually cost £11 to add the BMC. On the new policy, take £11 and multiply by the number of months in a year, you get £132, which is why the large increase

Adrian Flux quoted £405.00 which I was happy to accept until I enquired about business usage (I travel to clients often, often with IT equipment in the car), to add business cover upped the quote to £570!!

Brentacre are closed until Monday...

HIC quoted £550 including cover to drive other vehicles (DL wouldn't do this) with owner's consent, track day cover  (aparently is standard on modded car quotes) and also will allow up to £1500 of cosmetic changes (inc. lowering and 280mm brakes) at no extra charge bar the paperwork (£25).

Best so far...

Don't bother with Adrian Flux, they're a set of c**t.

Basically, your insurance is sending you a take the p*** price, in the hope that you're one of those people who just renews without a second thought. Prove you're smart, shop around, get the best quote you can, and take it back to them. Tell them to beat it, by a good margin, or you're taking your business elsewhere.

Elephant seem good and i'm with them but in the small print it says they replace all parts with standard ones, so you pay to insure your mods but they wont replace like for like.

They are robbing theives too!
