My gearbox went as well yesterday night.

There are signs for when it is going. I used to hear a crunching noise when changing gears and sometimes it felt like the whole gearbox was going to fall out.

When it happened there was a huge whining noise which went away after the clutch was left out of gear. But the first sign yesterday was when there was so pull from the car. I'm totally gutted, however I was planning to get it done on monday so i'm not to disappointed.

All I can say is that i'm going to write to VW if I have time and see what they say.
Mine went a few months back not long after me buying the car. I wrote to VW and this was the reply i got.

Popped her up on the ramps today, he only managed to get a quick look before he went. Should be gettin Ace gearboxes out tommorow to have a look at the box.

Was a nightmare to reverse it about 15 metres or so up to the garage, it went but made a few noises, ABS light popped on and it got stuck in reverse for a minute

Anyways, the casing didnt look to be split, however the oil had leaked out abit through the seal...hopefully its a case of repairing the internals such as bearings etc, but if not then it will be a full whack re conditioned box.

Ace gearboxes will be coming out tommorow. Should hopefully have it on the road next week.

Ill keep everyone posted

I'm taking my car to my uncle's workshop on a truck. I'm not risking it. I don't want to damage the gearbox anymore.

Hopefully its just the seal and the internals like olop_chris said. I'm just hoping the casing isn't broken.

I was investigating putting a lupo gti box into the polo. After speaking to my bro, he says its not worth it and there is too much time involved. However it can be done.

D-Dub: - I don't understand how VW are not aware of this problem. WTF! I knoe enough VW dealers who are aware of the problem. Why not have a recall and get them to fit the Lupo gti box in for us? VW are so tight.

Anyways after experiencing the gearbox going i've been getting the p*** taken out of me by my dad. Doesn't really help when i've spent a fortune on it. I'm actually considering selling it after and buying something else. But i'm sure i'll be loving it once its all repaired and running smooth again.

By the way i'm running a short-shifter. I've been told its not worth having it on the car as it causes more stress to the gearbox. So all those who were considering this, just be warned!

VW will not recall the Polo GTI based on the fact that they class it as a 'relic' e.g. the vehicle has now been replaced with a newer version

What have people done in the past when theirs have gone?

I know, i even gave them a massive print out of quotes from various people saying they experienced the exact same problem. They just dont give a s**t and turn a blind eye to the problem!

[quote="olop_chris"][quote="CymruPolo"]That's **** Chris :(

Ive just been on the phone with Ace Gearboxes LTD in Northampton, they can get me a recond box for £475+VAT.

Ignorance is a virtue..... Is that price exchange ?? If it is then once they find all the bits in the bottom of your box the price may accelerate faster than a Space Shuttle !!!!

Regards

I had a new clutch a wee while ago and the difference is astonishing :) although having said that, the old one was pretty much shot to pieces

The olop is having a gearbox oil change on Tuesday of next week so hopefully that will improve the notchy gearshift. I've also asked them to check the condition of the 'box in general so we'll see what they say...

Nice one mate, i got robbed...i paid £15 more than you. I also got a new clutch and it feels so light.

New box is abit stiff and feels like it needs wearing in abit, but feels good.

One of my friend has mk4 valver as i do....cut long story short...He had EQZ gearbox instead of CWX..because CWX had been broken in some time in past while the first owner had his car and he decided to put 1.6 8v gear box -EQZ-......Now we are using AHD -Polo GT- gearbox instead of EQZ to substitute CWX....now car goes weel....like a mk4 valver should do...;)

Something goes wrong with that 085 gearboxes.......

I'm just wondering when mine will go. Most of the time it's fine. Sometimes I have trouble going into 2nd and 4th after revving hard in 1st and 3rd respectively. I also put it into 5th tonight and didn't feel a thing, but it went in gear, that felt strange
