hi guys,
still trying to figure out whats up wth my car, will list things point by point and let the mechanically minded ones cast judgement.
1 - bought the car last august, clutch failed on the way home, had that replaced
2 - gearstick had always been reluctant to go into gear, no grinding etc, just as if it was going to do it, but in its own good time, i've never forced it, just pushed gently until it popped into whatever gear, i think the main problems were with the lower gears, and going into first once i'd stopped, would sometimes need to lift the clutch and push it back down, and even then wasnt too happy about going into first, a bit like it had been 'blocked off'
3 - had it serviced by vw in august this year, mentioned the problem, got my car back and they said they had adjusted the linkages - gearbox was perfect, i was over the moon, lasted three weeks before i noticed a notchyness going into second developing. took it back to them, they had a drive, couldnt find anything wrong.
4 - since then its returned to how it was before pretty much, i cant underatand how it could go from being so good to back to how it was - anyway, replaced the gear oil, not a bit of metal in the stuff i took out - so thats a good thing i guess, still feels the same with fresh stuff in it unfortunately. no wining or popping outta gear etc.
my dad seemed to think it may be something to do with the syncromesh or something - based on my twaddle, what do you guys think? ask any questions if you need more info, i'd just like to have an idea rather than being so in the dark

dangerousdave has suggested that the 2nd gear synchro is one of the issues with the gti gearbox - which makes it difficult to change from 1st to 2nd. This sounds like the explanation for 3.
I am not sure what to suggest though, apart from having the linkages checked once again.
What mileage has your car done? Should you want a comparison to see if they are all the same, I am happy to meet up?
