I love my GTi, but im starting to loose my patience and my money because of it.
The clutch in the GTI is pants as you know, ordered a SACHS one as mine was on its way out. Cost 90 quid, got it fitted by a garage down the road.
Verdict: New clutch rocks! its super light and how the original should have been all along.
Bad news is that now the box has gone, sounds like diff whine, according to the mechanic. My polo is at 66k, I noticed a trend of nackered boxes on these boards.
Recall perhaps?
sachs clutch, VW box
My clutch seems to be ok, but today has really pi***d me off, my gear box has gone i think it makes a real bad whining sound if you let off the throtle, and the gear box has been whining slightly for a while
Is there anything VW will do about this i got 73k on clock, but i have read about loads of gear box problems on the net

Hi mule, welcome to the forums
VW will do something about your gearbox yes. They'll offer to take a look at it for you but will tell you that it takes several (6 or 7) hours of engineer time and you can imagine the kind of figure that will come out at when labour costs £65 per hour!
Andy, good news about the new clutch, not so good about the gearbox
If several members of this community, who have suffered gearbox failures/problems, were to sign a standardised letter re the gearbox issue and then someone collected all of these letters together and fired them all off in a bunch to VW UK, do you think anything would be done?

Can't see VW doing a recall on the Polo GTI as the yougest GTi is now over 5 years old, they will class it as wear and tear although the fact I still have to hear of an original GTI box making it past 80k is a joke. As the Lupo 5 speed GTIs start approaching the higher miles these are going to start to go aswell so there no way VW are going to be able to deny theres a problem then. It also effects the 1.4 16V boxes but as they run less power/torque they generally last a little longer than the GTI boxes.

BENNO wrote:mule my box started to whine when i let off the throttle.. i got a recon box from volks spares for £450+vat and fitted a sachs clutch and had no problems since.. i found it cheaper and less time consuming to get a recond box than send mine off to be fixed. mine was on 60k miles
Yeah its a joke ent it, i have spoke to loads of people about this problem and im too still to find someone whos box has gone past 75k. Im gonna track down a box, get it sorted and start saving for the next one i recon. Spoke to VW they said they will sort it for £2300, how nice of them!!
