Cambelt change notice

This morning I had a notice from VW in the post saying that their records show that my Polo needs a cambelt change and it needs to be done every four years!

My car has only done 30,000 miles - just wondering whether it is really neccessary to go ahead with this? or has anyone went ahead with this from VWs notice?!? (if so how much did this set you back and did it require removal of the wing?)

Im not sure whether it should be done, or is this just another way of VW getting me to part with some more cash - as I always thought 60,000 miles would be when to think about changing.

Yeah I got notification from my VW dealer like yourself and it did take me by surprise at first. I posted a message on here about it and I got some responses. General opinion was to get it done. I decided to get it done at the same time as the 4 year major service and also had the brake fluid changed. It came to £542 in total with the cambelt and tensioner fitting priced at £176. Hope this helps cheers

I got the same note and got it changed even though I was only 3k miles shy of the 60. Last thing you want is for it to break. £££££.

I was quoted £400 by my VW dealer in Reading. Since its no longer under warranty I took it to the local VW specialist who did it for £240. This was on my 1.4TDi though but I dont think I got that far on the phone before they said the flat price of £400 for a timing belt chain.

Thieving nomads and VW Reading did an apalling job on the one service I had done there including braking the wiring harness to the brake pad when they changed them resulting in a permanent fault light. They wanted to charge me £120 to fix that. I went nuts at them then they did it for free.

I got a call from VW asking if i want mine done while it's in for a minor fluid service and some repairs! Mine is now on 49K and is 4 years old.

Was quoted £389 by VW - gonna shop around VW specialist's!.
