81 is the last year of mk1 production, you can get mk2s that are 81 as well, but most are mk1s

See if she knows what model it is, Theres only one that could be either a mk1 or a mk2 and that's a formel E. Otherwise mk1s are N, L, LS, CLS or GLS and mk2s are C, CL or GL

Agreed, it's a crossover year.

Get te reg, do a lookup on rac.co.uk. Generally speaking:

Polo L, LS, GLS = Mark 1
Polo C, CL = Mark 2

Or just ask her if it's the one with the square boot (like an estate), or the sloping back.

Should be a MKI. 895 cc was the first Polo and 1043 is the smallest engine on the MKII.

Good luck mate, I thought I'd found a good MK1 a wee while back, but it turned out to be a MK2!
This seems to be more promising, even has the stereotypical wee lady owner :D

A tip for buying mark 1's.

Show up as fast as you can, give them as much money as they want, and drive away quick before some other b******d buys it.

Made this mistake twice now. The first one was the real gutter. The car was a none-starter due to a knackered condensor. By the time he'd got a new one (overnight), someone had done a buy it now on ebay.

And the best bit was, I was in my Mk2 and couldn't be arsed swapping the condensor on to check because I had to be at work soon
