New user and 1st time car owner seeks advice.

Hi first and upmost I am glad I have discovered this site. Some of the stuff I have read is incredible and some of the cars on here are amazing.

Secondly I wanted to ask for your advice, I have just bought my first car, POLO 2003 1.4 S, 5door, Rosewood Red, picked it up with 15,200 K on the clock . So far so good and have been enjoying it immensly but I think its about time I moded it up a little.

Where should start and what should I consider Personally I was thinking alloy wheels first? upgrade the 14' standard alloys which are on there at the moment and invest in some 16' or perhaps 17'? Which are better and which do you recommend and tyres?

Then maybe consider the sound? Currently the car has a factory fitted VW CD Player and 6 speakers (as far as i know), I was thinking spending around £200 and getting something decent that will last me a few years, an Alpine MP3/CDA/IPOD compatable headunit?
Perhaps even upgrade the speakers and add a sub too if the need be.

What do you think?Where should I start to upgrade my car .All thoughts welcome

Wheels are normally personal preference. In my opinion, 16"s are probably the best size, with 17s not too bad either.

Keep in mind that putting on larger wheels could influence handling and performance.

Thanks for the reply. Il have a look around for some 16's, obviously id need some new tyres too? Any idea how much a decent set should cost include tyres? or can you recommend where I can find some good ones? You mentioned larger wheels could influence handling and performance? Is this in a benificial way or negative? Would I need to get it lowered aswell If I am going for the 16's or is this personal preference? Whichever would look better I guess.

the way your car looks is personal preference really. if you prefer big wheels go for 17's, if not 15's or 16's.
With regards to lowering your preference again, 15/16's shouldnt look out of place. Also taking into account ride quality on a lowered car compared to performance and looks.

firstly welcome to the forum matey!!

i think as AK said, i'd go with 16s as the will nicely fill the arch gap and u shouldn't have too much problem if u did decide to lower the car!

as for tyres, most companies that u buy wheels from will also supply the correct tyres with the alloys! (2 birds, one stone).

No ideas on tyres, but you can't go wrong with brands such as Toyo Proxies, or Bridgestones - depends how much you have to spend and the profiles you go for e.t.c. But as Dandiesel says, most dealers supply tyre/wheel packages

Larger wheels will normally slow a car down, which you probably will notice in a 1.4 tbh.

Lowering would look good and whilst most would improve handling, sometimes just wacking springs on standard shocks can ruin the ride quality considerably. To get an idea, best to have a look through here: http://www.tigerstyle.co.uk/poloforum/v ... 420f9efe03

Mines pretty much decked on coilovers and handles wicked , but some may find it inpractical if its daily driver. so its really down to personal preference and what kinda look your after.

thanks for all the replies, its great getting some advice. Right the look am after is something smart, not too boy racer type. something moderate in between. Il start with the wheels, il have a look around for a decent set of 16's or 17's and then move on to sound, deffinately need good music quality for all the road journeys il be making.
