So as I drove off there's this scraping/screeching type noise coming from the centre every time I put my foot down.

Does it sound like the gearbox? I'm crossing my fingers that it's something else not so serious, but knowing the GTi's history with gearboxes
Sounds like the box mate, (bummer) same thing that happend when mines was about to go.

Don't VW just replace them with another badly designed gearbox?

I can see this killing off Polo GTI's in 10 years time. No one will want to fork out for a new gearbox and just scrap the car :(

This maywell sound naive but why dont you report it to watchdog, my car hasnt required a gearbox change yet, its only done 17000. If watchdog, get enough complaints, its possible they maywell intervene! well hopefully!, i understand we need a large quantity of people to this though. The amount of people, that have stated they've required a gearbox change is a joke, people need to start putting complaints in, and if they already have then great!!... Sooner or later they'd be the knight in shining armour!!!

Search for "Ace gearboxes LTD" on google. They did my box when it went...was about £475 i think....but will still probably only last for another 50,000 miles

I've sent a complaint off to Watchdog by the way. I hope I'll get something back, probably won't though.

Mine went at 87,000. I wrote a letter to VW and they replied saying that they were not aware of any isssues with the polo gearbox  Even though i had about 2 pages of quotes from people off tyresmoke.net saying they'd had loads of problems!

Ignorant twats!

Well, they took mine on a friday, and i had it back on the tuesday...but im guessin it would be quicker if not done over a weekend...but unfortunatly thats just how mine fell and i needed it sorted asap

you need to get some1 to take the box out, then they will come and pick it up...repair it or swap it then return it back to where your car is, then get it put back in by whoever took it out!

hope that helps
