I think everyone that's had their gearbox go should package the bits up and send thm to VW head office, with a nice little note :D

watchdog wont be interested - it's a 6-7 year old car, if it was 12mths old and a current model then you might have had a chance.

The box went in my old mans golf at 18k 2 months out of warranty and he had to fight tooth and nail to get them to cover the majority of the repair.

The only way Watchdog or VW would be interested is if the problem was put across as a saftey issue like the box failing when you were pulling out a junction. The failure rate of these boxes on this forum at least is well over 50% so I'm sure VW are well aware of the issues they will however never admit it as if they did they would have to replace or pay towards each box that has failed.

VW's problem is that if they start replacing gearboxes for free everytime one fails, with it being an actual design fault/weakness they'll be doing it for the lifespan of the car. And as Dave says unless it's a safety concern, which essentially it isn't, VW have probably found that the cost of doing nothing is a lot cheaper than replacing gearboxes every other week or so.

Be interesting to see what would happen if you threatened them with legal action though, as most big firms will back down and settle out of Court to avoid the bad publicity.

One final thing, do you really wanting to be posting stuff like registration numbers and names on a public access website? Might be better PM'd to one person or whatever, just a thought.

Agreed, much more secure. Remember, this is a public forum!

I'm tempted to write a letter to VW UK at this address:

Yeomans Drive
Blakelands
Milton Keynes
MK14 5AN

Is this where you sent yours?

I think it might be a good idea if we get: names, registration plates and how much mileage the cars were on when the boxes went and send it to the them to see what they say. That way there would be no way they could say it was a one off. We could also mention that every one of us have sent Watchdog an email.

I know it's only a very slim chance they'd actually do anything but it's better than doing nothing.

Any thoughts?
Yeah mate thats where i sent mine. I've got my local trading standards office ringing me this week
