New fault

Post by tornado_ally »

I have a whole new fault to add to the list of Polo problems. We have all heard of the creeking dashboard and other dodgy loose fittings I'm proud to say I'm the only one with a 5cm long spring poking though the cloth on the back passenger seat. What an achievement or is it the legendary German build quality beginning to fray. The dealer had no cover-up garbage to say nor could he blame it a mysterious fault like thay always do. Its going in on wednesday. I will be keeping you posted

NEVER heard of this problem on the 9n before. Might just be a bad seat, at the end of the day they're only made by humans after all. Or you could just be having one too many fat birds in the car... :?

Can you provide any pictures?

I dont now about the fat birds bit. I wouln'd like to think so.

I'd prefer to call them large birds but your right that might be why but still dont change the fact that it looks unsightly........... and the seat too

More seat problems

Post by bertJ »

I've posted before about the endless problems with our 1.4tdi Polo, bought last April. We also had a seat problem. My wife tipped the driver's seat forward to put something on the back seat (3 door of course) and the seat back jammed hard up against the steering wheel. It was impossible to move and we had to call VW breakdown. They came out and managed to get the seat into a fixed position. The cable release mechanism had broken inside the seat.
The dealer had to 'borrow' another seat from a demonstrator. It took nearly a month to get a replacement seat. Both front seats were replaced as there was a suggestion that there had been problems on other Polos with the seat tipping mechanism.
Add to this a replacement gearbox at 450 miles, new door seals, dropped door hinges and two major oil leaks. The total warranty cost is in the region of £2,500. We would get rid of the car if possible but would get a derisory part/ex sum.
VW can just go on repairing the car until it's out of warranty.

I'm in exactly the same position. The (bad) rep the car's got in the trade has affected their resale values so much that I can't afford to change out of it. But now I can't take the risk of keeping it more than the three years before the warranty runs out. Not what I expected of a VW...

I REALLY don't think the resale values are a reflection of the few (niggly, lets be honest here) problems the 9n Polo has been having. It's more likely the Massive Specification changes/Price cuts that have caused that.

Still, its a bit unfair on the owners though. I think the Polo would still be holding its value quite well (remember its not doing too badly now anyway) if they had kept the £325 + leather pack offer. But then they took it off, reduced price again etc etc

Glasses guide must be having a nightmare!

Massive spec change, maybe but don't forget where they've added equipment they've also removed other items, cruely robbing us of a bargain.

Deek is right, bad press is affecting trade in, I've lost 5k in just over a year on my car and VW can't attribute that to spec/price changes.

I bought a Diesel because I thought it'd hold its value - yeah right!

A little creaking here and a squeeking seal here is not a big issue in an otherwise well designed car but I get the feeling that the car designers at VW just designed the Polo quickly in between designing huge new projects like the Touareg and Phaeton. It seems almost like the Polo was sqwueezed in missing out on the finer touches yet getting a drizzle of VW's penny pinching tendancies. For the record the 310bhp 4.2 Sport Touareg costing £43,000 has a "cooled" glove box but no glove box light.........hmmmmm lemme see. I think that rings bells. Its the little things.

I love my car but it has many little niggles like:

1. The boot doen't shut properly as the lock catches on the rubber seal running along the base.

2. Dashboard creaks.

3. The front suspensions creak.

4. Rear passenger seat has a spring through it ( call it no tolerance to large people but it should still be able to last at least a year)

5. The horn wasn't working but through some tampering I eventually got it to work.

I dont think these faults are major but they are little niggles. I'm not complaining. Just feel as the car is under warranty the VW people might as well fix it though as we know it is never that simple. I'm lucky in that my garage know me very well so I never have problems. Some people are not so lucky.

This is the general feeling of the Motoring press as well. The main attraction of the Polo was its Passat class like build quality and refinement, its a combination of manufacturers catching up + the company 'abandoning' the car for other projects like MK5 Golf, Touran etc etc. Its not common sense really. They're gonna sell 100,000's of Polos compared to the 2 Phaetons they're ever gonna sell

While the press/general public know the build quality and materials have stalled (hate to say gone down) the general niggling faults never seem to be 'common' and most unique to every vehicle (bar chamshaft seal leak and suspension creaks). Therefore, I still find it hard to believe some of the build quality issues have affected depreciation and if it has I personally think the effect would represent very little.

Sorry i'm im rambling
