My Gearbox has gone - Urgent advice needed!

Coming back from lunch yesterday I started hearing a high pitched whining - I thought I was the exhaust, as I just managed to wack it on a speed bump

The car then cut off and came to a stop, lots of juddering etc.

I have got a quote for fitting a recon gearbox, with 12k / 12month warrenty, fitment of a clutch (I need to provide) all for £620 (but he'll do a deal if I pay cash) - What do you reckon? Sounds like a good price to me?

Next question is; What clutch shall I get? Sachs? What else will I need to get, cable? My engine code in AUY 2001-X if that helps?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! (This is one bloody expensive month - got insurance, service & MOT due next month )

Thats not a bad price including fitting, however I would make sure when he says recon box that it isn't just a 2nd box as that will go at somepoint anyway. What you want is your box/a box that has been stripped down and had all the bearings replaced so it should be good for some time.

I would also go for the sachs clutch your for under £100 from www.eurocarparts.co.uk

a reconditioned box and a second hand box are more or less the same thing...a reconditioned box will simply have been cleaned up inorder to look like a new gear box...but all the internal components will still be the same...

There is a guy up here who sells recon boxes that are stripped checked and all bearings replaced, they also do 2nd hand ones which are basically removed from crashed cars and given a quick check. Thats why I was trying to put across that not all recon boxes are the same what ever box you get to replace a failed GTI box the bearings need to be replaced in the box and the diff. If you get anther 2nd hand box it will basically go again.

Yeah, I am a fully paid up memeber now I was thinking of selling it - Was looking at TT's, thing is I still love the damn car, now the gearbox is being done - I think i'll keep it!

I am going to cheer myself up & order some new rims for summer soon!

Thanks to every one that replied - I have gone for a sachs clutch kit & got a new cable from vw. The box is a recon box, but does come with a 12 month warrenty. I hope we have some success with the watchdog / trading standard thing! (Have been meaning to email but have been so busy that past few days)

I put a sachs clutch in from eurocarparts when i had my box done, its loads better then the standerd one its softer, works smother just a hole round better clutch in my opinion

Alun - That is what I was told, so I thought I may as well get is sorted now - Kinda makes me feel better - Knowing I will be spending all this money, at least the clutch will be softer!

I don't know what the part number is - I just called eurocarparts and gave them my reg, telling them I want the sachs clutch kit.
