I know this sounds silly but is there anyway I could fit a GOLF or POLO TDI engine in the engine bay of my 1998 Nov 1.9 CLD polo?

I need Diesil for the miles i do as work and know of no engine mods for the dirty straight D so could this be an option or is it a big NO NO!

Muppet? It's a legit question IMO :D

It has actually been done a few times, but it's a Lot Of Work. The engine mounts of the Golf are different, so that means fabricating and welding new mounts inplace. The Mk5 Polo Tdi (3-pot) should actually fit, but I bet those engines are still quite expensive. AFAIK, that has not been done before. The engines from the Polo Classic or Variant (Estate) have the same mounts as the Golf range.

Also, I've heard stories about the 4 cylinder TDI engine being too high, so that the bonnet won't shut and/or the oil pan scrapes. Don't know if that is true or not though.

The electronics is more or less the same as with any inter-model conversion, so hard but doable.

Isn't the 1.4 3 pot basicly a 1.9 4 pot with a cylinder choped off? Your best bet would be the 1.4 for an easy swap they are found in the lupo, Arosa, Ibiza and A2 as well as the polo they have 75bhp as standard (as much as my 1.6 petrol) or the A2 now has a 90bhp version, there are people who will tune them to about 100bhp so should be quick enough but still get good mpg.

Nice engine too. Drove an A2 with it, and it's nice and torquey - no hint of it being a 3-pot either.
