Not being funny, but considering the rather worryingly high rate of gearbox failures amongst GTi owners would you really want to risk it?!

If you are going to all that effort why not stick a better engine in?

Get a lupo gti engine and box. There's a guy on clublupo selling one. He wants £700 for the pair. Only done 20k if i remember correctly. That way you get a reliable box as well. You'd have to change the pedal box to hydraulic and the gearbox mount, but could take it all from the donor vehicle he has. He's got a complete car, so you could get the ecu and loom as well.

Good Luck!

I thinking of doing the same thing, but I'm just not sure how to go about it. And what the cost of labour would be. A 1.8T would be better, but I can only imagine how much more the cost would be!!!!!

its not too bad mate, £620 for 38k engine and box, £150 for rear exle with brake set up, and £120 for front brake set up and replacement hubs.

My dad is fitting it all for me so that wont cost a penny! Chuffed like. Didnt want to get rid of this and just buy a GTI, would break my heart seeing someone else driving the olop. Have to get rid one day tho
