Alternator?

Post by Jim1500 »

The battery light flickered a few times. About a week later it came on and didn't go out. I drove home and when i went to start it again the battery was goosed, but started on a jump. I'd left it sitting for a few days and then stuck jumpleads on it to move it and was driving in down the street and the light went out, turned it off, and on again and it started so the battery was getting charge.
The fanbelt is spot on tight (not too tight).Everything seems to be connected up to alternator ok too.

Is the alternator goosed or could something else be causing this?

Cheers

check all the batt/earth leads are clean and tight, and it might be worth fitting a new voltage reg/brush pack theyre £10 ish at gsf and usualy restore a alternator to full power again...easy to fit too

Right enough I only recently fitted a new earth strap (between alternator and body) in a panic, suppose that could have come loose.
I've a spare alternator here, but it looks like a pain to replace!

I had left it parked up in the drive for the last 2weeks and went to start it yesterday, jumping it from another battery.
First I took off the new earth strap and cleaned the contact on the alternator bracket so it was clean.Checked battery earth etc and all ok.
Took ages to start and ended up replacing the rotor (it had a crack and was a wee bit burnt) and dizzy cap which were both only about 2years old. Took it ages to start and when it eventually did it ran like crap. Sounded like a fuel thing ,but there's between 1/4 and 1/2 tank in it.
Good thing was the battery light was out and it was charging.Took it for a spin down the road and onto the motorway, hit about 50 in3rd gear and the light started to flicker, slowed a bit and dropped into4th and it went out. Further on I increased the revs to try and blow out whatever crap was making it fart and splutter it came on again. Basically as soon as I hit highish revs the battery light comes on, or after the car has warmed up a good bit it comes on and the battery stops charging.
The fanbelt is just nice, doesn't need adjusting so i was thinking the only other thing is that the belt is slipping, I've a new one here which I could fit.
Anybody think of what else it would be??
