I think I possibly have the same noise although its hard to tell because as you said, its a bit hard to describe. I actually can't think of any words for it! I also noticed a bit of an engine whine when its cold and stationary - but i couldn't only really hear it from outside the car.

Service next month though so if its anything bad I expect it'll get picked up because I'll be asking the mechanic to have a good check over.

Sorry to hear that Alun. I don't have any suggestions as to the source of the noise, but it may be best to get your cambelt etc changed at your next service.

I bet you wish you had kept your 16v

I get a kind of "clackidy clack" noise from my engine when its on idle....thats the only way i can describe it...but i've just grew to get used to it, doesnt seem to be anything wrong with it!

Think that may be the tappets chris, mines is the same and iv been told the tappets cant be adjusted on the polo. It isnt a problem tho, just annoying.

Alun, i used to have a small screeching noise in my 1.0l polo when i had it, and it did it mainly on start up!
turned out to be my water pump which was changed under warranty luckily. might be worth a look??

Hmm I ain't too sure but I doubt it's something major. Hang in there because it's worth it when you get to take the car for a proper drive again :D

firslty cymrupolo, when u say a 1 litre car u best not be talking about a polo cause i got a 1 litre polo and i like it.

but about the noise, if its like a grinding noise that goes away when u start driving but dissapears when ur not in gear, it might be the gear box, im not sure cause its the problem i had and my car is still in the garage. the engine got rebuilt with new parts and so did the gear box hopefully it'll be perfect when i get it back.

the only thing i can think of is doing what my cousin has done to my car, he got my engine out and sent that of to someone and it got stripped down and rebuilt then once that came back he got the gearbox sent away and that got stripped down and rebuilt. both of them have new parts now. just gotta wait to see if its perfect when i get it back. hopefully it'll be this thursday. hopefully.

in other words if u know somewhere that specialises in gear boxes or engines get them to look at it. my cousing got charged £750 to get the engine and gear box rebuilt with new parts. if it didnt get done the gear box would of gone totally n e way so its better to get it done early instead of being stuck in the middle of no where.
