I have had mine for 3 years and apart from servicing and a new clutch it has been good as gold. They are not all bad, but finding a good one may be a challenge.

I've not got any complaints with mine & the only common problem that I've heard is the gearbox, but tbh all cars have their faults & in my opinion the polo gti is worth the risk of the gearbox going at some point. You might also need to check to see if the wheels need refurbing but that would be the same with any car with alloys really.

There's a few low mileage ones on Autotrader that I've seen, the only problem is you might have to travel for it!

Just realised - you're the guy from ClubGTi aren't you? I think I responded to your thread on there about this - Hello! 8)

I had to travel nearly 2 hrs to get mine but I think I got a good one, no problems yet. The gearbox is one of those things that may or may not happen but it doesn't bother me too much.

The pedal box is the other problem but that is covered by a recall meaning vw will fit a new one for free.

It took me 4 months to find mine but it was well worth the wait.

I'd say they're definately worth getting 8)

Especially the Silver ones

I was lucky mine was less than a mile away. It was love at first sight.

Another "silver" vote for me :)

I travelled 280 miles for mine, spent over 4 months looking for it and fell out with my parents...they wanted me to get something 'sensible'. But ever since I first latched eyes on this car I knew I would never be happy with anything else....I looked at the civic sport as well & mini coopers (my parents were willing to give me several grand to get one!!) but still I went through with it, all my mates think i'm stupid but I have no regrets..I will happily waste my pay cheque on its problems if I have to...although I havent had to yet :)

Having had a MK5 1.4 16V SE Polo in Silver, I've been in the same boat as you, I am now actively looking for one myself, I just love the look of the car, the xenons, the alloys all do it for me, not to mention the insides too. I've not driven one as yet, but I have driven a few Polo's and if there anything like a MK4 1.4 16V 100BHP then I'm sure I'll have the most fun ever with it.

I would prefer black as I've already had Silver but even then I don't mind what colour, as long as it low mileage, 3dr and the body work in good condition then I'm fine with it.

I've already started buying bits I want for my mods already and have so far got some nice alloys needing refurbing ready to go on her once I get her :D

I seriously doubt you would go wrong in choosing one.

Is that the 1.6 Vivic, or Type-S? The gti would have the legs on the 1.6, but the type S would be very close, as it has a 0-60 time around the same.

But, if you are looking for a car, which is going to be at least 5 years old, and you are expecting better reliability than a 2 year old Japanese built car, then think again !

The gti has it's problems and issues, no.1 being the gearbox, which is fragile, as it wasn't built to cope with the power/torque the gti produces, and which will fail during the life of the car.

The MKV Polo is afterall just a face lift of the MKIV, the first of which went on sale in 1994. The gti was a last gasp effort, with desirable add-ons added, as opposed to always being the intention of a production model from VW.

It is however a fun car to drive and has some character. If you like the engine and the VW badge, and you enlarge your budget, I would suggest looking at a Lupo Gti, same good revvy engine, yet mated to a 6 speed gearbox (2001>) built for purpose.

For comparison to the car you listed, I bought my gti mid last year, same spec as that but with 27k miles for 5.7k. That was near the top of the price bracket then, but now I would say the max a gti should fetch is 5k.
