My 1.9 TDI will be 5 yrs old in April and I have had it from new. I love it still and intend to keep it. Strange thing is I have never had to top up the oil once in nearly 40,000 miles. I like the way you don't have to thrash the engine to get the best out of it.My TDI does in the mid 50's on most runs, and overall does 42mpg according to the 2nd memory on the computer, this always amazes me as all the petrol vw's Ive had only got into the high 20's on the 2nd memory on the same run to work and back.
It only uses a drop of oil between 6 monthly changes up to now (29000miles). TDIs are a nice lazy engine due to the torque, but I give mine a good blast every now and again as it helps to blow out any carbon buildup.

Yeah I give it an occasional blast up to about 4000 rpm which like you say, is supposed to clear the soot. I look in the rear view mirror when I do this but have yet to see a cloud of black smoke!! 
I drove down to Winchester last year, 200 miles mostly motorway. These engines become more and more responsive the longer you cruise at high speed. It feels so rapid. This engine is unmodified but it must develop considerably more torque than 177 lb ft and more power than 100 bhp. I have considered a remap but thought it might be too much for the clutch. What do you think?

You will only find out after the remap has been done, but it depends on how its driven. ie full power standing starts, wheelspinning etc are probable nono's. . If your clutch is pretty healthy it should be okay, all the remap will do is highlight a sick clutch before the standard engine would have. I'd like to get mine remapped, probably at Allard's as its not far from me, its just getting around to it.

as long as your driving style is sensible, you should be fine.
5th gear acceleration between 50 and 80mph is amazing on motorways.
i would definately recommend it
