Which Oil ????

Post by mickymunn »

Hi Guys,

just checked the oil level on my girlfriends 03 plate 1.9 tdi and it was below the min line on the dipstick. In the boot was a bottle of Castrol SLX longlife 3 5W-30 which vw gave her last time she had it serviced, (it's on longlife servicing)

Well the bottle was empty so i popped down to halfords and in there i brought the Castrol Edge 5W-30. Is this the right oil as on the bottle it says it replaces SLX Longlife 2 not 3???

Also is it normal for this engine to use oil? Ik sure ive heard it is, and also why didnt the oil light come on seeing as the dipstick was reading below the min line??

Thanks for your help!!!

Its Castrol SLX Longlife III you need.

If you go to a VW/Audi dealer they can supply you the right one its about £11 for a litre or 1.5l I think

Happened to mine too after I had it serviced by VW. The light never came on and its was below minimum too - not sure why :?

As long as the viscocity is not mixed its normally fine.

But ideally its best not to mix brands/types as well

The light normally comes on at low oil pressure.

By that time your engine is getting damaged anyway.

Not sure if it applys to vw's as i've never had one untill now.
