Has it had a detrimental effect on overall ride and performance?

Performance wise I haven't noticed any major difference.

In terms of ride, I'd say it was marginally harsher due to running lower profile (195/40/16) tyres. But to be honest it's not something I lose sleep over.

Nope, no performance that I have noticed and if there was any it would be tiny anyway. At the moment i'm running on 205/45/16 so getting a little rub. The drive definately feels more grounded...sticks to the corners slightly better (could be the new dunlop tyres)

Ever since changing from my 16" wheels to 13" steelies, I've noticed an increase in ride comfort, due to the larger tyres on the steelies.

Although, I have to say that changing to the steelies, I've also noticed an increase in my fuel economy.

And I haven't noticed a change in the performance, to be quite honest. But I do drive a 1.0l

I think it feels a bit slower with 16's on.....but the 16's i am on have 45 profi's so that wont help either, but when i had 40's it felt a bit better.

I am gonna go 15's next.

Plus having wide wheels doesnt help in the snow.....what a bloody mission driving to get up my lass's 100 yard driveway

my original 14" wheels were running on 185/55/14 tyres, when i first upgraded to 16s they were running on 205/45/16 and actually made the ride slightly more comfortable! :? but the 45s were rubbing like a b*tch, especially with rear passengers and on full lock, plus they really slowed down the car!

I knew i would have to switch to low profiles, then i came across this excellent website http://www.tyretraders.com/tyrecalc.aspx where it calculates the difference between rim/tyre sizes for you, just gotta put your old tyre size in and play around with new tyre size.. even tells you difference in ratio, radius and how your speedometer alters!

you'd be surprised what a difference changing from 45 to 40 profile makes, even when you change widths from 205 to 195 makes a big difference! according to the site, 205/45 tyres made a 2% change which sounds small but theres a big difference in speedo readings! while the 195/40 tyres only made 0.5% difference and minimal speedo changes!

this convinced me to go for the 195/40's and they made huge difference, could feel the car was quicker off the mark and steering felt lighter.. plus they looked alot better! 8)
