Servicing

Post by PoloGTi »

I've just had my car serviced at Smith Knight Fay VW, when I asked how much it was it came as a shock: 40k - £190!

I thought it would be about £115 like the 30k one and he told me that was just a lubricant service.

It has full VW service history but £190 is a bit steep when I know a mechanic who could get a full service done for about £50!

Does anybody go the cheap route or do you prefer to keep the fVWsh?

I now go the cheap route (cos it's out of warranty)... I take it to JBS Auto Designs in Chesterfield.

But I don't think I've ever paid full price for a dealer service

Hi, well I would agree with Josh on this I only take my car to VW cause of its warranty on it hasn't expired yet. But When it does I'll be carrying out my own servicing and taking it to a friend at a garage for him to finish off.

You shouldn't loose to much of the final value if you stop getting it done at VW.

Also, so long as they're a VAG Specialist garage, not just a back-street garage (and if you keep the receipts) it's just as good as a dealer history if you ask me.

Nowadays I'm pretty sure people realise that VAG Garages are not always the best out there, and so long as your VW Specialist uses genuine parts, there's not much that they can argue about.

Also, I'm thinking very seriously about getting an extended warranty through Warranty Direct.

£20 quid a month for piece of mind.

£190 for a 40K service, not bad. I'd even go as far as saying that was cheap! Considering a 40k service is the 'full monty' air filter, plugs, etc etc...

For me it depends on how long you plan to keep the car as far as dealer history is concerned. If you only keep it for say 4 years (from new) keep it dealer. If its something you want to keep long term, then for me, as long as its serviced well, then I don't think it really matters who does it as long as the service book is maintained.

One thing I do believe in though is good quailty parts, either genuine or from German & Swedish.
