Doubt about gearbox after reading this

I decided to plug my VAG-COM into my polo gti tonight and it found a fault within the engine. I took it to a gearbox specialist today and he actually drove my car and he said himself it's a very unusual noise to make if it is the gearbox bearings that have gone. I'll go back to tonight now, the fault it picked up was the " ENGINE SPEED SENSOR ", so I typed this into ask jeeves and this came up -

Engine Speed Sensor

The engine speed sensor sends information to the computer telling it how fast the car is traveling.

The engine speed sensor is designed to record the rate at which the crankshaft is spinning. This sensor consists of a toothed metal disk mounted on the crankshaft and a stationary detector that covers a magnetic coil that the current passes through. As the metal teeth move past the coil, its magnetic field is disturbed. This causes a stream of pulses in the current. The computer can calculate engine speed from the number of rotations of the crankshaft. The number of rotations are reported by the frequency of the pulses from the engine speed sensor.

Im hoping the noise could be this, but I don't have that much luck. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Cheers

hi, just read this, and no the sensor shouldnt be making any noise. that speed sensor fault will likely cause cutting out or loss of power, and i have been told by the master tec at my work that is all. i am currently looking into this fault as it has come up on my gti aswel.

How much are the sensors to buy? how much you want for yours mate? Thanks for the help people, but thats not what I wanted to hear, lol.
