another one bites the dust (UPDATED 29/03/07)

Post by Luke'sGti »

well, the time has come - my gearbox has bitten the dust :( - approx 7000 miles after the initial sounds of it going, which i thought was impressive

Mileage is at just over 70k, so have put it in with a vw specialist to be reconditioned, also having the sachs clutch kit fitted. I'll let you know the results. Hoping to have it back this time next week, until then i am Gti-less :x

yeah - it depends on what has gone really - if the casing is ok then it should be approx £500 for the box refurbed, inc labour and fitting etc. If not then i can be looking at anything up to about £800. But i thought it would be a good time to get the sachs clutch kit fitted whilst they were taking the box out. Tbh i have budgeted £1k just incase.

ha ha, i look at it positively - when i had it serviced in october they told me it was on its way out, so at least i had time to save up and budget for it - those prices are including the clutch kit etc. For a new box alone from vw it would cost £1100 apparently

I've had a price of £490 to re-build my box and for my vw mechanic to get it out and put it back in. £1k is wayyyy to much mate

i dont intend on paying 1k, i'm just saying thats what i have budgeted for its just incase anything else is wrong - it has to be said i was a little concerned doing 70mph  and smoke coming out the back of the car whilst it was whining away. I'll just be glad to get it back all fixed and whine free. I also need a couple of other bits and pieces sorted at the same time, so thought it would be best to over budget than under budget and get stung...I just hope it works out that way. :?

well i will fingers crossed get my car back tomorrow. Gearbox re-done and new clutch fitted, once i get it back I'll post prices up of everything. But i spoke to the garage on Saturday and they said it will be £350 for the gearbox plus v.a.t. which i thought was very reasonable. I'm having a sachs clutch kit put on, engine oil change, and a few other bits and bobs done. I'm just touching wood hoping it'll all be fixed.

Quick update just rang the garage - it will be ready to collect tomorrow - total price £750. that is for the following:-
Sachs Clutch kit
Re-cond'd Gearbox
Oil Change
Labour
V.A.T.

Not too bad I didn't think. Your thoughts?

I'll give more of a breakdown when I get it back tomorrow

car back finally (updated)

Post by Luke'sGti »

It has to be said the car is sooooooo much better now - really smooth gear changes, new clutch is fantastic - light as a feather. Breakdown of costs as follows:-

Fully synthetic oil £ 25.20
Sachs Clutch kit £ 92.00
Oil and Filter change £ 35.00
Oil Filter £ 1.00
Oil 10/40 semi synthetic £ 4.50
Labour £ 112.50
Recon gearbox £ 370.00
(inc diff case repair and new bearings)

Total £ 634.70 plus vat = £ 745.77

All in all I didn't think that was too bad considering it is a vw specialist and for how it drives now it was definately worth it 100% 8)

thats outrageous :!:

Although mine was probably cheaper as it was done at the same time as the gearbox.

Sounds like a reasonble price, I am pleased you are happy with the result.

Could you add the required details to this thread if possible, for reference: http://www.tigerstyle.co.uk/poloforum/v ... hp?t=27270
