GTI running badly at low revs

I've noticed recently that my GTI isn't running well at low revs, its absolutely fine once I put my foot down, but if i'm in traffic its a bit spluttery and jumpy when travelling at a constant speed. Possible reasons for this that I've thought of are:

Spark Plugs/HT leads nead changing
K&N panel filter needs cleaning (probably less likely seeing as K&N only recommend cleaning every 50k)

Can anyone think of anything else it could be?

I also get some jumping when changing gear/taking my foot a little way off the accelerator, its not my driving style because it never used to behave like that. Any ideas?

It sounds like it is probably your plugs that need changing to me.

Yeh, that was my first thought. Will probably change them this weekend and see if i can get some of the red ht leads that came with the GTI because my current ones are black.

I had a look in my haynes manual and it suggested possible dirty air filter but it doesn't seem as likely.

hmm as you say, pretty unlikely. Although it's only a 2 minute check to make sure there aint any crap in there.

Out of interest is your haynes manual for polo 6n2 or Gti? as i didnt think one existed for the Gti

Its just the 6n2 one, there doesn't seem to be one for the GTI, most things are the same as the DOHC 1.4 16v engine Polo so its still quite useful.

annoying isn't it, gonna try changing the spark plugs and ht leads this wkend.

It'd be more likley the fuel filter rather than the air filter.
But I dont think it would be either.

Take off your airfilter and give the throttle body a spray with carb cleaner.

Change them before anything else - they're only about Â£15 a set

Lol, I'm borrowing my mates tool to do it cos he's a mechanic, but I'm planning on doing it myself so I actually learn from it, I expect i'll get him to give me a few pointers first but I'm quite happy to get in there, get dirty and get it done!

I've added cleaning my throttle body to my list of things to do at the wkend.
