Gearbox Rebuilds - How much was yours?

Post by Tigz »

Gearbox failed yesterday.
Thinking about throwing about the Polo engine and box (well, put the engine in the Lupo) and fitting a Lupo GTI engine and 5 speed box.
Including the replacment pedal box, master cylinder and pipework, theres an extra £131.33 to be able to fit it.
I think loom and ECU should be able to be kept.

Ive seen a low milage engine and box, which with the extra bits needed will cost £800 to buy.

I'm trying to work out wether to go this route, or wether just to get the Polo box repaired.

How much did it cost for yours to be repaired?
Excluding the labour costs if you know.

Round about £100. Did it myself :D

Relatively easy, just allow yourself pretty much a whole day

I too was gonna go down this route. Some dude on your site had one for sale, but decided to keep the six speed and sell the 5 speed instead (Penry was it?). Didnt see the point in going to that much trouble for a 5speed!

Thats the engine and box Im thinking of.
Two reasons I want to do it.
1. They dont break.
2. No pedal box problems due to the light clutch.

Also it seems daft to repair a box which will probably fail again in a year or so.
(I do 30k miles a year)

Yeah still got the numbers. Was all the bearings and seals minus the needle roller bearings that wont need replacing. I didnt, but i'd recommend you replace the plastic 5th gear bearing with a metal one. But you will have to buy a plastic one from vw in order to match it up!

I have all the timkin numbers as well, but i found bearing suppliers were dearer than the dealers.

Thats the plan then.
Who in there right mind uses a plastic gear in a gearbox?
Muppets.

Part numbers and timkin numbers would be fantastic if you wouldn't mind.
The company I have been uing to rebuild the engine, gearboxes and axles on my vans over the past few year said they'll rebuild it for me, so at least I dont have to get my hands too dirty.

I just hope theres no casing or shaft damage.

There all retail prices btw, I managed at least 10% on all of it. Vagparts may do them cheaper though.
