[1.4 9n] Wierd noises, squeking, cracking and random Pops??!

Post by Lanttu »

(First - there is a story... Then .. there is my questions... )
About an year ago we buyed our Polo. It was used and runned over 60 000 km by then but we get it from the official VW dealer with good service history.

We knew that we can't get a perfect used cars and we were mentally prepared for some problems. Slowly but surely it then revealed the bad side of VW quality to us.

First it started with some random rattling noise from the back suspensions. I asked about that sound from our dealer and from local VW forums on internet and get totally different answers. On the forum they said that the sound comes from loose ended shocks from the back and it is not serious but annoying and naturally it might decrease the live of my cars suspension system.
Dealer said that this is bs and said that the noise comes from the plastic dust covers that surrounds the suspension. I didn't swallowed that but there goes my change to use my warranty to it.

Then I got used to it and and noticed some new noise from front suspension. Wierd cracking and scratching noise while I was turning the front wheels at slow speed. Again -- forum said that the reason is my suspensions that kind turns with the car (mcpherson's still here!?) and some times gets stuck and when suddenly released it will end with this "BANG!" sound. Well.... Dealer said that it is a feature and will not be fixed.

Last week I got new rims. 17" rims with 205/40 wheels on those and noticed this new sound again. It sounds like too big wheel gets contacted to plastic on the wheel box. I could not however find any traces from that inside the wheel boxes so I started to think.... The sound is wery random but if I really want to hear it, I should drive to bump about 20 km/h and turn little bit left. Not right. Only to left. And the sound seems to come from right front wheel.

Is it now really time to get some suspension kit to this Polo? Can I get rid of most of the wierd noises just with some sportkit?

I had to ask about that new sound from my dealer again. This time, there is no warranty left so I think that I can trust him on this case. :D He said that there is too probabilitys. First is that the drive axel joint is just dusted or damaged (blaimed my 17" for that  ) or wheel bearings from the right side are weared of (and again "Because of your too big wheels.")

So... Any Noise related comments are welcome. What to do and what not to do with this situation?

Lowering? Yes. I want to do that. Now it just looks stupid :D

Sounds like you need new top mounts for the fronts and rears.

Yeah the front ones turn but they only make that noise when the rubber is worn and dried up - which creates the crackling pop noise at parking speed.

If you jack your car up and look under the front wheel wells you will see the bottom of the top mount. If you soak it with silicone lubricant this would get rid of the noise, but if they are worn it will only come back after time.
