Polo tdi - ringing noise when i change gears

Hi,

i really do need some help. i have a 2000 Polo TDI (1.4) and recently i have noticed that as i press the clutch down to change gears, i can hear a slight ringing noise from the engin area (i think). then when the i lift the clutch back up it all sound fine. i am tempted to go and have the clutch replaced, but would like someone opinion before i get this done.
