Key Barrel Sticking

I have a problem with my GTi where the key won't turn in the key barrel. It turns far enough for the elctrical instruments to turn on but it won't let me turn it all the way round to start the car.

I did finally manage to get it to turn fully when I got a jump start which made me think it was the battery or starter motor.

I asked at a local garage as I thought the battery was faulty but they said the key should still be able to fully turn in the barrel.

Any ideas as to the problem would be gratefully received!

i dont know if its related but my dad had a problem like that with his porsche, it wouldnt turn and then it started sticking in the barrel. It turned out to be a broken tooth inside the barrel, it was sticking so he had to spend 200 quid getting a new ignition barrel sent from germany
