Hi,
My mate owns a J reg mk2 Golf GTI 8v. He is getting an Audi TT engine conversion and therefore has his engine for sale. He offered it to me for around £400. Thats including the gearbox, full Magnex exhaust system, stainless steel manifold etc, etc. Problem is, will it go in my cl. Ive researched and found that I will need new engine mounts, subframe, and basically a load of money! But any advice would be gratefully received.
Cheers,
Steve

anything is possible.. i am currently still looking into a vr6 conversion in my mk3, but it aint gonna be easy.
mk3 polos dont use engune subframes... mk2 golfs do.
also, not too sure about this, but i think i read somewhere something about glf engines sitting at the wrong angle to fit in a polo.
dan???

Hi,
Yeh I thought so, but I have had quite a negative reaction to the conversion from most people on all the polo website forums. I understand the expense, but surely I am intially getting a good deal. The engine + everything necessary for a conversion and an induction kit which I forgot to mention for £400.
I was told to get a subframe made so that themk2 golf engine could fit in. Even though mk3 don't use them. Yeh I was also told about the different angle. The golf gti engine is also a tall block as opposed to the mk3 polo one.
But yeh, advice needed!

How many miles has the gti engine done..
I was gonna sell my 2.0 8v with stage3 head, 285 cam, induction kit, expensive power rohr (cant remember brand but cost me £120!!), rebuilt driver 4+E gearbox, full stainless scorpion exhaust, polished rocker cover, and ALL brand new ancillaries (ever got a quote for a new water pump, alternator, dizzy??) for £800.....
offer £300 cos its gonna cost you shed loads to get all the fabricating done...

The Mk 2 Golf engine (GTi) is a tall block block opposed to the mk 3 polo which is a small block. The golf one leans back and the polo leans forward. The engine would need a special subframe, I think a guy in Germany called Salzmann does the conversion kit for about £1000. And various other things need modifying. The golf stainless manifold wont fit neither will its exhuast.
If your on a budget, forget about it. Theres too much work to get it in.
I dont know how good a deal you think that is, but you can get full GT running gear for around £ 250-300 (depending on mileage etc) nowadays. That goes straight in more or less, which is a much better option.

Yes, the 1.4 8v and 16v will go in along with the 1.6 small block. You can run the 8v ones with GT management, but not the 16v.
The 16v would probably need either carbs or throttle bodies with mappable ecu.
You can get more out of your gt engine with a few useful mods, maybe try before you decide to do an engine transplant.

I Don't want to ride along with you in a 1800cc (tuned) polo coupe. The handling sucks big time, rounding corners is due engine weigth not that much fun to do, but on a straight drag strip it will go like charm
Those 1800cc blocks are to heavy for our littl'ones.
With proper tuning you can get a 1600cc engine with more power and that will be 100% more fun to drive

MK2 golf gti engine conversion into my mk3 cl coupe!
hi,
thanks guys, I think I will pass on the engine. I didn't realise it was sooo fookin' expensive to do that type of conversion. Im gonna do the boring thing-wait til my insurance goes down a bit, then get a G40. However, there will be mods other than the engine, so watch this space!!
Cheers again,
Steve

Yeah, much like mk2 golfswith vr6's suck at handling...Gilex wrote:I Don't want to ride along with you in a 1800cc (tuned) polo coupe. The handling sucks big time, rounding corners is due engine weigth not that much fun to do, but on a straight drag strip it will go like charm

whatever.
some of the fastest cars at ClubGTI track days are vr6 coverted mk2 golfs.
Have you been out in a polo with a heavy engine??
A friend of mine had a mini With a heavy engine. 2.0L of vauxhall 16v in a mini only weighing 750kgs... Now there's a unbalanced car if ever there was.. The magazines that it was featured in all said that the engine was too heavy and too far forward when in actual fact the car was beter handling than a Renault Spider (and anything else it came across..)
All i hear is peeople saying that cars never handle with heavier engines... when none of these people have been out in any of the cars tey talk about.
and as for a 1.6 being 100% more fun than a 1.8... hmmmmm
