New Gearbox or Recon??

Post by TheEggShell »

I was speaking to some mechanics yesterday about the common fault with the GTi's gearbox.

They said that if it went it would be better to get a brand new gearbox than a recon as they are never as good.

I was wondering what those of you who've had the gearbox changed think?

I got a new box from VW, but it was just a reconditioned box. I hear a new box is not available anymore. The reason for this was that the casing was f*cked and that alone was £700 IIRC.

"New" gearbox from VW is £1000 including internals. It fits straight in, no messing around.

Hope this helps.

It is correct that there is no new gearbox available, if you buy a 'new' gearbox from vw its basically just a rebuilt one that has been exchanged.

A refurbished box should be as good as a new box aslong as its been totally stripped and all the bearings replaced and the syncros checked/replaced if required.

I had mine done a couple of years ago, by vw under warranty at the same time as a 30000mile service which was a recon box and it went again begining of this year with 70000miles on the clock ,
