VW charging £92 for diagnostic
Yea i've been wondering where the gearbox oil is for a long time! done the same and went looking through haynes, even contacted haynes themselves.. said they didn't publish one for 1.4 TDi as there are not as common and demand is low?! so frustrating.. we should maybe start a petition to get them to print it! if you find out where the gearbox is located please let me know, cheers!

ok a quick update.
i have spoken to various people about the noise problem i am having (still not been able to find out how to get to the gearbox oil), and it seems that i have a clutch problem. i spoke to a guy from Mr clutch who said he as seen similar problems and that he has been able to get the problem sorted by replacing the clutch bearings. does any know what this is or if im being lead up the garden path.
im taking the car to mr clutch tomorrow, the guy i spoke to said they offer a free inspection and that they will be able to pick up any clutch related problems.
clutch bearing estimate is a mear £230
will update this post with my findings.. will be good info for Way_Z especially!
