New clutch or not?
New clutch or not?
My poor car is off for its gearbox rebuild on wednesday, was just wondering if I should be getting the clutch cable changed at the same time seeing as the gearbox is out. I've got the standard clutch at the moment and not sure whether it is better to stay standard or get the sachs clutch!?

I think most garages would recommend that you change the clutch if the gearbox is coming off, but then it would depend on when you last had a clutch fitted. If you don't know when the clutch was last replaced it'd be a good idea. Best to get the mechanics opinion on your current clutch.
Also from what I've heard the sachs clutch is pretty good, so I'd count it as an 'upgrade'

I had my gearbox and clutch replaced month, the gearbox had failed and the clutch only had 6mths life or so left, The garage charged my £94 for the Sachs clutch kit and didnt add anything on for labour.
The new clutch is nice and light although im not best pleased with my reconditioned Black Diamond gearbox (gear stick rocks back and forth when coming on/off power in 4th gear, never did this on old its old box).

Bryony - I was told to change my clutch at the same time as my gearbox being out - for a sachs clutch kit it cost me £90 via the vag garage i was getting the work done at - for the difference before and after i would suggest getting it done - mine felt like a new car when i got it back in comparison.
if you look at a pic of a gearbox, you'll see one end has a circular recess for a clutch to fit into (dinner plate sized). The gearbox needs to come off to get access to the clutch, so if the box is coming out anyway it's not really much extra work to change it.
My gearstick rocks back and forward as well - there's a knack to stopping it by the way you use the clutch - smoothly! The garage told me my gearbox mounts were worn.
