gear wont shift in to 1st or 3rd gear wen on hills!

hi im having a problem with my polo 1.4cl 1997 AEX engine

it just wont go into to 1st gear when on hills and 3rd gear this only happens 40% of the time any reason y ??

also when im on 1st,3rd and 4th gear and driving the gear leaver moves a little up and down like wen i put accelerate the gear leaver moves slighty down and when i deccelerate the gear leaver moves up but this only happpens in 1st,3rd and 4th gear. Other than that the gears are nice and smooth!

any 1 any ideas??

my gear stick thing moves like yours when i acelerate and relese, so i presume thats mormal. sorry can't help you with the rest sure someone else will be in the know

the linkage could be a bit bent? worth getting it to a garage it's a pretty easy thing to check.

yeah the movement is normal unless it's more than an inch!
