polo or golf gti?

polo or golf gti?
i thought id ask you polo owners first to see what you thought of the golf 1.8 turbo. if you've driven one, great, if you havent just try and share some info
do you see it as a step up or a step down?
this is obvious in power, but 150 brake from a big heavy car compared to 125 from a smaller car is actually fairly similar
would you class the polo as more fun to drive? i know the golf has alot more power gains in modifications due to it being turbocharged- which would be the obvious route.
so what would everyone go for? the polo or the golf? as im looking to buy soon and having not drove the polo i thought id ask

Well in all fairness mate, and don't take this the wrong way.
People have obviously chosen the Polo GTi over anything else, hence us all having one.
Yes the Golf can be tuned more than the Polo but it's still a big heavy car, the best thing to do is to test drive a 1.8T Golf then the Polo GTi and see which you prefer.

It really depends on what sort of driving you plan on doing. If you are doing a lot of miles, especially on the motorway, I would go for the Golf. If you are doing short journeys and handling is a priority then it's got to be the Polo!
The Polo will probably hold its money more than the Golf because of its rarity.

wouldnt get a diesel, my bro has one now and not a fan.
the 2.0l gti is one of the worst gti's they have ever made!
im definatly swayed towards the golf due to the power and modifying potential as after 500 quid you have around 190 bhp from the 1.8t
i think i'l miss the fun of driving a polo though as i love throwning mine about

I used to drive a Mk5 Golf GTI with DSG, if you're after refinement then they v good, but then you would have to be spending a fair wedge of cash (I also think this counts for Mk4 R32, let alone Mk5 R32's).
I sold the Mk5 to save some money, but also because I wanted a change. I wanted something a little more go karty, if you know what I mean.
I test drove a 54 reg Ibiza Cupra which I felt had awful ride. It crashed and bumped on normal surfaces and didn't like speed bumps one bit.
I felt the interior wasn't of high enough quality to balance against the £9500 asking price. I also felt that it would lose its value sooner rather than later. The engine pulled well and the exterior looked brilliant, but when you spend your time inside the car it should feel as good on the inside as outside.
I choose the Polo because it still has a comfortable ride, and decent enough amounts of power, as well as a good interior, identical levels of kit to the Ibiza and good safety levels.
In the Golf's favour would be a higher amount of power with more room for increasing it further, as well as if you went for an Anniversary Edition a great interior (Recaro's, etc). The problem you'd have would be finding a good example for a low price with a low enough milage to justify it (a lot have seen a few owners and high miles in short order). As well as the Polo I had been looking at S3's and Golf Gti 1.8T in between as well, and I was seriously unimpressed with the interior space (as well as the fact bits fell off) of the S3, although its front seats were great (recaro's again - although you'd have to be careful of colour combinations, there are some awful examples).
In addition I'd consider a last gen. Honda Civic Type R, since there are a large number about that haven't seen high miles. Having previously owned one they're great fun, and if I'd not sold mine when I did I might still be in it now (at the time I was bothered about depreciation - it turned out I wasn't right then - since seen my car still looking v good on a motorway going back home). If you could afford it I'd look for the run out models with better Recaro Seats and a Momo steering wheel, although the standard cars are still pretty good.

I've not driven the 1.8T but my boyfriend has the 2.0 mk4 golf and I have the polo gti so I can do a pretty good comparison of both as I drove the golf down to cornwall and back last weekend.
The golf is very comfortable and the steering is extremely smooth. Its fast enough (got caught by my first ever speed camera - oops) and theres a lovely rumbling when you put you foot on the accelerator. It isn't as good on corners as the polo, obviously its heavier but it also doesn't feel as stable round corners as the polo. It also seems to have issues with the brakes when you do a lot of heavy braking. They tend to overheat and will start to slip on heavy braking. He's solving this by upgrading the discs and pads.
My Polo isn't as comfortable but this is probably because I've got low profiles tyres and a lower suspension. Its much more fun round the corners than the golf, and even more so now I've lowered it. Its also much better on petrol consumption, the Golf was extremely thirsty! The other big bonus is xenon lights on the Polo which make a huge difference for night driving - it was a shock to me how little I could see in the golf at night.
