is upgrading the brakes a bad idea?

Post by nickpolo »

i have been considering the 280mm G60 brake upgrade, but someone i work with said it would be a crazy thing to do without upgrading other components such as wheel bearings etc as the added stopping power will take the car's components beyone what they were designed for - i hadn't considered this before - has he got a point?

thanks guys

Just what kind of qualifications does this person you work with have with regards to chassis tuning?

All you're doing is increasing the size of the discs from 256mm to 280mm. You're not actually increasing the braking force through fitting bigger calipers.

There's enough people on here who have done the 280mm upgrade without any problems, myself being one of them. So I'd suggest you stop worrying what people who, by the sounds of it, don't know what they're talking about say and get on the upgrade.

The change wouldn't exert any additional stresses to other associated components.

The only downside is hassle with changing the rims around if you get a puncture on the front.

Nick, I have a pair of new OEM G60 discs I purchased from VAGparts 2 months ago, but have decided not to do the conversion. I also have a pair of (used) carriers for the conversion. If you have any interest in these items let me know, as you are local it would be easy to meet up. I understand if you wish to buy new.
