New Polo 1.4S rumble/resonance noise.

Post by mike w »

:?: Has anyone experienced this problem? At speeds above about 20 mph, there is a light rumble / resonance from the front of the car, a bit like rough wind noise. This is not dependant on engine speed / load, (freewheeling makes no difference) or road surface, and seems to be
the same whether going at 30mph or 60 mph.
A 1.2E Polo which I hired for a day for a test drive exhibited the same problem, which I thought was down to that particular car. This noise spoils an otherwise quiet ride.

You can get this if your tyres have different tread patterns, this upsets the balance of the car.

Thanks. The tyres are Firestone F-590 FuelSaver 165/70 R 14 and have only done 250 miles. Maybe I should try a different make of tyre?

We have a 2003 1.2E which after driving it new 50yds from the forcourt was noisy from 15mph. Turn the engine off, freewheel dip the clutch its still there. The dealer fitted softer tyres which made no difference to the firestones. At present VW technical are involved but not interested. They say they only take note if they get ebough complaints about an issue. I have driven different spec cars and this is not a factor, some do and some don't. I have just driven a Lupo base model 80miles and its quieter than our Polo. Complain to VW customer service and they may start to take notice.
